Work starts with checking the substrate for level and flatness, since large-format tile will not sit flat over a substrate that dips or humps even slightly. Low spots get built up and high spots get ground down until the floor reads flat across the whole room. A layout is dry-fit first — tile laid out without adhesive to plan where full pieces land, where cuts are needed around doorways, cabinets or fixtures, and how the pattern lines up from one room into the next. Once the layout is set, tile goes down on thin-set mortar spread and combed evenly, with spacers keeping the grout lines consistent across the room. After the mortar cures, joints are grouted and cleaned so the lines read straight and even, and the floor gets a final check for level before it is called finished.
